The TMSA is back at Celtic Connections 2017

The TMSA is back at Celtic Connections with 2 concerts in 2017. The first is a second chance to celebrate the re-issue of Norman Buchan's seminal song book ‘101 Scottish Songs’, in partnership with Collins to celebrate the TMSA’s 50th anniversary. This second concert of fine singers from around Scotland, including Aileen Carr and Jimmy Hutchinson brings a fresh selection of its songs to life. First published in 1962, Norman Buchan's book has been a welcome returnee to the scene and has inspired Collins to republish other books such as The Songs of Robert Burns and Tartans & Highland Dress. ‘101 Scottish Songs’, is one of the most influential songbooks ever. Popularly known as “The Wee Red Songbook”, thanks to Buchan’s left-wing politics – widely shared by the folk scene at large – it compiled both popular and lesser-known traditional material from love songs to lullabies, bothy ballads to children’s rhymes, and provided the basis for many a singer’s repertoire, with much of its content still sung today. The concert takes place on Saturday 21 January, 7.30pm at St Andrews in the Square, 1 St. Andrews Square, Glasgow G1 5PP. If you want to catch up on the first concert from this year’s Celtic Connections, the DVD is still available from the shop page on the TMSA website - www.tmsa.org.uk plus there are links to how you can get a copy of the 101 Scottish Songs book. The second is the first concert of the TMSA Young Trad Tour 2016 group will be performing at Celtic Connections on Saturday 4 February, 1pm, Strathclyde Suite, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The line-up is: Mohsen Amini (winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2016 competition), with finalists: Jessica Burton, Robbie Greig, Claire Hastings, Hannah, Murray Willis and Ryan Young with the 2015 winner - Claire Hastings. The TMSA Yound Trad Tour is sharing the bill with Feis Rois & Lauren MacColl’s commission: ‘The Seer’ - certainly a concert of two great halves! Tickets for both concerts are available on www.celticconnections.com or phone the Box Office tel: 0141 353 800 for details. TMSA members can get a 10% discount on the 101 Scottish Songs/Wee Red Book concert tickets by buying on the phone or in person.
